Celebrating World Smile Day

Every year on the first Friday of October, we celebrate World Smile Day to encourage everyone to stay positive and kind! It was first initiated by a commercial artist in Worcester, Massachusetts named Harvey Ball in 1999. He was known to have created the “smiley face” in 1963. Ball created the icon while working at State Mutual Life Assurance Company in order to increase the morale of employees. Today, people across the United States celebrate World Smile Day annually.

The smile not only represents happiness, but it also is an uplifting symbol that can impact your attitude and positivity. The majority of us often underestimate the importance of a simple smile, and what that gesture can become. Since we are oblivious to others’ personal problems, the least we can do to help out our fellow classmates and teachers is to greet them with a happy expression. The positivity will spread from person to person, eventually brightening everyone’s mood!

“Smiles are contagious” is a famous saying that truly means a lot. A Fox News study shows that happiness can travel a long way; "Happiness is like a stampede," said Nicholas Christakis, a professor in Harvard University's sociology department and co-author of the study. "Whether you're happy depends not just on your own actions and behaviors and thoughts, but on those of people you don't even know.”

On World Smile Day, you may not receive physical gifts like on Christmas or birthdays, but you still receive the wonderful internal feeling of joy and confidence! So always remember to smile and keep moving forward, as well as encouraging your classmates and teachers to stay positive!
