Why I Honor The American Flag by Rebecca Honaker

Why do I honor the flag? It's simple. When we think about the flag, we shouldn’t think about what separates us, instead, we should think of what unites us. Everyone should have the privilege to be considered an American, regardless of political opinion, race, or religion. None of these things matter in the end. The word “American” deserves our utmost respect. The one thing that we all have in common is that we are all American. So when the National Anthem is playing, take the time to reflect on our nation.

When seeing or just listening to the National Anthem, it is important to think about the people who sacrificed their own lives for us. Still today, not all people respect this. When going to a sporting event and the National Anthem is playing, people just stand up and then sit back down. Do they even really think about the brave and bold soldiers who risked their lives for each and every one of us? I am sure that those soldiers were scared to death. However, they still did it to protect us, because they understood how important their duty was to our country. That’s why when you are honoring the national anthem you put your hand over your heart to remember those who gave their lives so you can live.

I honor the flag because it gives much deserved appreciation to the first responders. People don’t always notice what the firefighters, policemen, and doctors do. They go to school for many years to be able to save lives and to help people solve their problems. Even though the flag stands for many things, these are the most important things to me. Policeman and firefighters all risk their lives daily, just to help our communities. This is why I honor the flag. It dedicates itself to anyone who has risked and currently risks their lives for our country. When the national anthem is playing at anytime, put your hand over your heart, and really think about why you honor the flag, our country, and the veterans who helped keep it safe.
