Art Club by Merilee Behrendsen

Recently, our middle school art teacher Miss. Smith has opened up an Art Club for grades 7-12. We meet every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 to 4:30 after school. Art Club is a fun after school activity both for the students that participate and for Miss. Smith. “I did an after schools art club at my old school and I loved it. This school didn't have many art programs and I wanted to do something extra.” Smith explains. We do various art projects for school needs or fun projects that are enjoyable.
In Art Club we have done fundraisers for this year’s reenactment and for the Art Club funds, for example making cards and ornaments for the Christmas season. Most of my favorite cards were mostly puns and little jokes. When we were doing ornaments, We were taught to smooth out the edges of the clay or else it would be like broken glass, very sharp. This year we made a Thanksgiving feast for display in the cafetorium, these are the same displays that we used for the Grinch theme hallway during Christmas. We were very much in the Christmas season in art club crafts, we decorated the seventh and sixth grade teachers’ doors on our own flash time.
Most of our first times with clay was learning about the proper way to throw on the wheel. My experience with clay was fun and like anyone else’s first time, very satisfying, yet very difficult if you wanted to master it. With our ugg mugs, we got to make whatever we wanted as a mug. This was one of my favorite projects that we’ve done because we got freedom on what we wanted to do on our mugs. We were so caught up in clay some of us started to make spoons, forks, and adorable little poop figures. This project was some of the worst days to wear white because of the clay we were using, also known as red clay that you would see in between your nails after a nice day of claying.
